NIPT pregnancy screening · One Crawford Square

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)

NIPT stands for non-invasive prenatal testing. It is a blood test taken from your arm from 10 weeks of pregnancy to estimate the chance of your baby having certain chromosomal conditions, including Down’s, Edwards’ and Patau’s syndromes. Your appointment includes a pre-test consultation with Dr Linda Simpson.

NIPT is screening, not diagnosis. Accuracy and predictive value vary by condition; additional screening is not necessarily the best option for every pregnancy. Your clinician will confirm the current laboratory panel, suitability and limitations before consent.

About this service

Care that starts
with you.

During pregnancy, small fragments of DNA from the placenta circulate in your blood. NIPT examines these fragments to estimate the chance of selected chromosomal conditions. Only a blood sample from your arm is needed; no needle enters the womb. It is a screening test, not a diagnosis: a higher-chance result needs further assessment and may be followed by a diagnostic test. NIPT does not check for every condition or replace your routine pregnancy scans.

02   Attend for a blood sample with one of our nurses from 10 weeks; your ultrasound wellbeing scan is included.

Understanding your options

NIPT, explained clearly.

What does Standard NIPT screen for?

The Standard package screens for Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards’ syndrome (trisomy 18) and Patau’s syndrome (trisomy 13). Optional fetal sex reporting is available. Your clinician will discuss what the result can and cannot tell you.

What are Advance and Absolute?

These packages include additional screening beyond the three common trisomies. The scope and performance of screening vary by condition. Dr Linda will explain the current laboratory panel, limitations and suitability before you decide; a larger panel is not necessarily the most appropriate choice for every pregnancy.

Does NIPT replace my routine scans?

No. NIPT does not replace routine antenatal care or ultrasound examinations. It cannot screen for every genetic or structural condition.

What happens with a higher-chance or no-result test?

Your clinician will explain the result and discuss the appropriate next steps. A higher-chance screening result needs further assessment and may lead to an offer of diagnostic testing. Some samples do not produce a result, and the options will be discussed with you.

Is ultrasound included?

An ultrasound wellbeing scan is included in the Standard (£399), Advance (£419) and Absolute (£435) packages. The scan and blood collection may be separate appointments.

How long do results take?

Our clinic guide gives an expected laboratory timeframe of around five working days from receipt of the sample. This is an estimate, and extra processing or a repeat sample may take longer. Our team will explain how your result will be shared.

Is early fetal sex testing the same as NIPT?

No. Our separate early fetal sex blood test is available from six weeks, subject to eligibility. It does not screen for chromosomal conditions. Please ask our team for details.
