Understanding endometriosis
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere, often around the ovaries and other pelvic organs. It can cause severe period pain, pelvic pain, pain during sex, bowel or bladder symptoms, and difficulty getting pregnant. Symptoms vary from person to person.
Getting a diagnosis can take years. Endometriosis UK’s 2026 report found an average UK wait of 9 years and 4 months from first seeing a doctor about symptoms to diagnosis. You do not have to wait for symptoms to become severe before asking for an assessment.
Understanding test performance
What does the evidence show?
Sensitivity
The proportion of participants with endometriosis who tested positive in the study.
Specificity
The proportion of participants without endometriosis who tested negative in the study.
These results were reported in a 2025 multicentre validation study of 971 symptomatic patients aged 18–43. They describe performance in that study, rather than an individual’s probability of having endometriosis. False-positive and false-negative results are possible.
Your clinician will explain how the evidence applies to your symptoms and circumstances. The study was funded by Ziwig. Read the published validation study

Start with a consultation.
Is this suitable for everyone with pelvic pain?
No. Pelvic pain has several possible causes. Your clinician will consider your symptoms, history and investigations before advising whether Endotest may be useful for you.
Will a saliva test replace a scan or surgery?
Different investigations answer different questions. Your clinician will discuss whether ultrasound, other investigations or specialist referral remain appropriate. The test does not map endometriosis or determine its severity.
What does it cost and when will I get results?
Please contact our team for the current test fee, consultation costs, laboratory timeframe and follow-up arrangements before proceeding.
